Question

I’ve got an old laptop (2Hz CPU/2GB RAM/160GB HDD), its battery died, and I decided to use it at home as a server. I need data backup, printer server, file sharing and maybe web server.
Is it a good idea (I mean power consumption, etc.)?
What OS/software should I use (FreeNAS, Windows Home Server, other alternatives)?
Thank you.

Answer

You will probably want Linux, which is more lightweight and to avoid the cost of buying a new Windows Home Server license.

Consider Ubuntu Server or Debian, which will do pretty much all you need for a lower cost.
